Activities will begin at noon at the center at 777 Sinclair St. in Reno. Reno Aces Mascot “Archie” will make a special appearance and Alice 96.5 FM also will be on site to do a live broadcast. A brief grand opening ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. and include a ribbon cutting and unveiling of the center. The event is open to the public and will feature tours of the facility, barbecue from BJ’s, snow cones, face painting, balloons and t-shirts designed by teens at Cabinet Ink.
The Wilbur D. May Youth Center will open to the public in December and will replace the Children’s Cabinet’s facility at 2005 Silverada Blvd. The center will provide a full range of services including teen drop-in, academic tutoring services and the Alternative High School as well as afterschool leadership, work experience and gang intervention programs. It will also house Cabinet Ink (a teen-run silk screening business/entrepreneurship program), Project ADAPT (Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Prevention and Treatment), runaway and homeless youth programming, case management and counseling services.
The goal of the center will be to provide services in an emotionally supportive, engaging environment for youth that not only impact them but in many cases also change the course of their lives and their families. The center became a reality through a lead gift from the Wilbur D. May Foundation and gifts from the Nell J. Redfield Foundation, the Frank M. and Gertrude R. Doyle Foundation and an anonymous donor.
Proceeds from this event will support Children’s Cabinet services for at-risk youth that will be located at the Wilbur D. May Youth Center. Items for sale will include barbecue from BJ’s, soft drinks and 25th anniversary t-shirts silk-screened by youth at Cabinet Ink. Everyone who donates $25 or more to “Launch a Child’s Future” will receive a 25th anniversary helium balloon for their support of services at the Wilbur D. May Youth Center.
