On America's 234th birthday Sunday, the local Star-Spangled Sparks went off without a hitch between activities at the Sparks Marina and Victorian Square.

The Sparks Idol competition took a little more than three hours to get through more than 40 acts at the Sparks Marina. Visitors also had a chance to watch the Milk Carton Parade of Boats and Races.

In the late afternoon, vendors on Victorian Avenue slowly began coming to life about two hours before fireworks were set to begin. Parents enjoyed a quiet afternoon with their children at the water fountain in front of the Century Sparks 14 movie theater, getting their faces painted and getting balloons from Uncle Sam.

Kids also enjoyed fun rides set up just off the avenue.

For most, it was an opportunity to sit out and relax under tents or in the shade waiting for nightfall to come and to listen to the free entertainment.

The holiday, which fell on a Sunday, helped to accumulate one of Star-Spangled Sparks' largest turnouts in its history.
