The Reno City Council Wednesday approved $3,402,099 in grants to the Reno Police Department from various sources, including one grant that will fund hiring of 10 police officers.

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Recovery Program Grant will cover the full salary cost of the new officers from Oct. 1 through Sept. 30, 2012. The COPS program requires the department to retain all 10 officers for a minimum of 12 months following the end of the grant period in 2012, which represents a grant match by the police department of about $897,653.

Between 10 and 13 applicants for the new positions would begin their training in late November or early December.

A $420,000 grant will be used to hire three victim advocates. A crime analyst position will be established through a $103,218 Recovery Act Violence Against Women grant. A $80,840 grant will be used to support narcotics enforcement operations as well as public education and narcotics abuse prevention programs. Finally, the Reno Police Department will be able to buy 17 Camel Back Hydration Reservoirs through a $196 grant from the Washoe County Local Emergency Planning Committee. These are individual water carriers for officers conducting first responder operations to keep officers hydrated during extended periods, often in hot, dry conditions.
