Even though it's light in this photo, increasing traffic on Vista Boulevard calls for a new traffic signal that will be installed at the corner of Wingfield Parkway.
The council approved a traffic signal at the intersection after a year-long study of traffic in the area. The project is expected to be completed within four months.
The intersection has seen three accidents in the past year, according to Jon Ericson, City of Sparks transportation manager, but no fatalities.
“It is being installed purely because of volume,” said Sparks Public Information Officer Adam Mayberry.
The intersection is the main entrance to many homes in the Wingfield Springs community. The intersection also leads to the main entrance of the Resort at RedHawk.
“The signal seems to make some sense,” said Michael Hillerby, executive vice president for the Wingfield Group, “especially with the city’s new sports complex being built.”
The 140-acre Golden Eagle Sports Complex and Regional Park will be located south of Vista Boulevard and east of Wingfield Springs near the intersection. The entire complex is scheduled to open in fall 2008.
Vista Boulevard has been on the City’s radar since 2006 when its public works agency began studying traffic in the area.
The study examined traffic needs at three different intersections along Vista Boulevard: Wingfield Hills, Wingfield Parkway and Iratcabal Drive.
The study concluded that the intersection at Vista and Iratcabal did not need a signal based on the city’s guidelines.
The council gave the contract to Titan Electrical Contracting to put up the signal for $188,160.
